" 'Last Bow,' one of the best-known ballet photographs in history..." - Laura Leivick, The New York Times

"His accomplishment is rare, and his photos are a priceless record of dance as it is in our time." - Richard Philp, Dance Magazine

The Steven Caras Dance Photography Archive includes in excess of 120,000 powerful images of the dance world's greatest icons and institutions. Spanning thirty years, this invaluable photographic documentation encompasses what is considered to be the most important period in the history of dance in America.

Included in the archive are a wealth of now-legendary moments from "Last Bow," George Balanchine's final curtain call with the New York City Ballet, to numerous stage, studio and behind the scenes photographs of the dance world's greatest artists and mega stars such as Mikhail Baryshnikov, Suzanne Farrell, Gelsey Kirkland, Alicia Alonso, Edward Villella, Natalia Makarova, Peter Martins and Rudolf Nureyev.

Dance companies represented within this well-edited collection are widely diverse, some of which include American Ballet Theatre, The Joffrey Ballet, The Royal Ballet, Momix, Twyla Tharp Dance Company, Ballet Nacionale de Cuba, Pilobolus, The Paul Taylor Dance Company, Streb, The White Oak Dance Project, New York City Ballet, Les Ballets Grandiva de Russia and Miami City Ballet.

This incomparable lifetime body of work is the creation of an artist who was mentored as both a photographer and a dancer by Mr. Balanchine, further distinguishing it as a canon of rare significance. The archive's recent appraisal is definitive testament to this fact.

The preservation of these negatives, contact sheets, photographer's prints and transparencies is of the utmost importance. To that end, Mr. Caras is intent on identifying a permanent home for his extensive photographic collection in order to assure its safety, longevity and ongoing public accessibility for educational and other creative purposes.
